BIRDS & FISH
Late in 2007 the Slieve Aughty's of east Clare and south Galway were designated an
SPA(Special Protection Area) under an EU habitats directive. This designation was imposed
because this region is home to one of Ireland's rarest birds of prey, the hen harrier.
The proposed windfarm site is adjacent to Glendree Bog SAC(Special Area of
Conservation) which also includes Lough Ea.
Lough Ea, an upland mountain lake is very vulnerable to eroding peat- given that two of the turbines are
sited on higher ground above the lake, any construction work will inevitably cause longterm erosion into
the lake.
